RtI Thrives on CHAOS

Sopris West Model Leads the Way

Sopris West Vice President of Professional Services Steve Kukic wants all schools and districts to thrive on CHAOS.

That is, CHAOS in the sense of a recipe for response to intervention (RtI)-based systems change. The acronym describes what the schoolwide, multitiered RtI structure aims to accomplish by identifying and working with students who are at risk for failure.

  CHAOS stands for:

C—Collaboration with a purpose: to   improve achievement
H—Hierarchy of effective, tiered   academic and behavioral interventions
A—All, some, and few as the consistent   focus
O—One child at a time; instructional   decisions based on progress monitoring   data
S—Systems change with coherence in   order to close the achievement gap

The CHAOS concepts are pervasive in Sopris West's products and services. LANGUAGE! ® The Comprehensive Literacy Curriculum is an example of a Tier III "intensive intervention"—part of the "H" in CHAOS—for students performing two or more years below grade level.

"There are many districts that are dealing with very tough-to-teach kids," Kukic says, referring specifically to large, diverse districts that have achieved success with LANGUAGE! "You can reduce inappropriate referrals to special education by implementing a tiered intervention model to find out which kids are truly resistant to intervention. Interventions are tiered; kids aren't."

  • Sopris West's "Conference Queen"

Tina Watkins "summers" on the beach, in the mountains, and in the heart of downtown—wherever educators and administrators gather to relax, rejuvenate, and re-energize during Sopris West's Summer Institutes.

After more than a year's worth of planning, organizing, and booking top education presenters, the director of meeting management travels across the country to carefully selected resort locations.

"Our role is to try to give back to teachers as much as we can," Watkins says. "Our team takes personal pride in giving teachers the opportunity to enjoy a place that they may not otherwise be able to enjoy."

Along with recreation and relaxation come three to four days of innovative sessions, beginning with an inspiring educational keynote that sets the tone for the Institute. Having worked in meeting management for various industries, Watkins is particularly impressed with the education experts Sopris West draws for its Institutes, conferences, and workshops.

"The nationally recognized presenters speak for themselves," Watkins says. "As opposed to some other types of industries where you typically bring in a motivational speaker who may not be in your industry, the presenters that we attract are all nationally recognized educators."
