Summer is a great time to catch up on industry
developments, network with colleagues, and learn new
strategies for the coming year. Our "Sopris Spotlight"
on response to intervention (RtI) presents ideas for closing
the achievement gap and making positive systems change in your
school or district.
We invite you to kick off your summertime professional
development by watching a video introducing Teaching
Reading Essentials: Video Demonstrations of Small-Group
Interventions and taking advantage of a free excerpt from
this or another new literacy supplement from Sopris West™
Educational Services. See "Product Focus" for
details.
Be sure to make time to relax and rejuvenate before school
starts again. The subject of this issue's "Insider's
Insight" is a pro at helping you do just that through
Summer Institutes that combine learning and leisure.
We welcome feedback on making Connections a more
valuable tool for you. Please send comments, story ideas, and
suggestions to e-newsletter@sopriswest.com.
Sincerely,
Your friends at Sopris West

Sample Our NEW Literacy Products
This month we'd like to let one of our products do the
talking. What better way to discover the effectiveness of a
new Sopris West literacy supplement than to see for
yourself?
A product that's creating a buzz among educators is
Teaching Reading Essentials: Video Demonstrations of
Small-Group Interventions, by renowned literacy expert
Louisa Moats and reading specialist Linda Farrell. These
professional development DVDs let educators watch learning
come to life as experienced teachers implement effective K–3
supplemental reading interventions.
In addition to 58 unscripted classroom video
demonstrations, Teaching Reading Essentials includes 18
professional development segments with Moats, featuring
insightful commentary, candid discussions, and
question-and-answer sessions.
We would like to offer you a free excerpt (PDF) from
Teaching Reading Essentials or your choice of another
new supplemental literacy program from Sopris West. A
combination of research-based core programs, targeted
supplemental interventions, effective assessment, and
professional development has been shown to close the reading
gap for students who typically score below the 40th percentile
on standardized tests.
Please visit our Web
site for your free excerpt, for access to an
exclusive discounted product bundle (save 10 percent),
and to view a short video introducing Teaching
Reading Essentials.
We want to hear how our products are working for you!
After you've explored our new literacy programs, please let us
know what you think at e-newsletter@sopriswest.com.

Sopris West's "Conference Queen"
Tina Watkins "summers" on the beach, in the mountains, and
in the heart of downtown—wherever educators and administrators
gather to relax, rejuvenate, and re-energize during Sopris
West's Summer Institutes.
After more than a year's worth of planning, organizing, and
booking top education presenters, the director of meeting
management travels across the country to carefully selected
resort locations.
"Our role is to try to give back to teachers as much as we
can," Watkins says. "Our team takes personal pride in giving
teachers the opportunity to enjoy a place that they may not
otherwise be able to enjoy."
Along with recreation and relaxation come three to four
days of innovative sessions, beginning with an inspiring
educational keynote that sets the tone for the Institute.
Having worked in meeting management for various industries,
Watkins is particularly impressed with the education experts
Sopris West draws for its Institutes, conferences, and
workshops.
"The nationally recognized presenters speak for
themselves," Watkins says. "As opposed to some other types of
industries where you typically bring in a motivational speaker
who may not be in your industry, the presenters that we
attract are all nationally recognized educators."

Your response to last issue's math focus confirmed
how the subject is gaining emphasis in schools and districts
across the country. We were happy to hear from customers who
are meeting new standards in math and helping all
students succeed with Sopris West products and services.
Susan Perkins, a special education teacher at Goddard High
School in Kansas, wrote:
"I just got the Transitional Mathematics set after
talking with one of your reps at the Midwest Symposium for
Leadership in Behavior Disorders. My principal loved it as
well and authorized the purchase. It is everything I need!
"The fact fluency is great for bell work and to keep
students thinking! I work with a group of special education
students, and this program is great to level students and meet
each of their unique needs!"
