New Facility Expands Our Capacity to Help You
Succeed
In October, Cambium Learning opened a new facility in
Frederick, Colorado. The 200,000 square-foot building, not far
from the Sopris West location in Longmont, will serve as the
central distribution center for Sopris West, IntelliTools®
Inc., Kurzweil Educational Systems, and Metropolitan Teaching
and Learning.
“We have been looking forward to this opportunity to grow,
accommodate our employees, and enhance our operations,” says
Angeline Bautista Dimitroff, director of marketing services
for Sopris West. “As a result, we are able to impact the lives
of that many more students, and the educators who work with
them.”

We hope our last issue of the year serves as a reminder
that we are all connected through our common goal of helping
all students succeed! We are happy to announce the
opening of the new Cambium Learning™ central distribution
center, which will allow us to enhance our services.
Also in this issue, we show you how a Sopris West™ author’s
product is changing the lives of families in a transitional
housing facility. What better time than the holiday season to
celebrate the joy these families are discovering through
positive parenting techniques!
In our next issue, we look forward to highlighting the new
products and services in our 2007 catalog. We welcome feedback
on making Connections a more valuable tool. Please send
comments, story ideas, and suggestions to e-newsletter@sopriswest.com.
Sincerely,
Your friends at Sopris West

Coaching Cards Make Nonprofit’s Parenting Classes a
Success
Whoever lamented that children don’t come with a manual
never encountered The
Parent Coach: A New Approach to Parenting in Today’s
Society.
The book and accompanying Coaching Cards—written by Steven
Richfield, Psy.D., and Carol
Borchert, B.A.—are being put to good use in schools and
households across the country. In September, the cards became
the basis of a weekly parenting class at Hope Gardens, a
transitional housing facility near the author’s residence
outside Philadelphia.
When his 17-year-old son, Jeremy, started a tutoring
program at Hope Gardens, Richfield met Lois Bowman, director
of programs for the Inter-Faith Housing Alliance.
“The director was looking for a program like the Coaching
Cards to provide both parenting guidance and practical
strategies for children,” Richfield says. “I sat down and
showed Lois the Coaching Cards and the book, and she was
sold.”

Sound Advice for Parent-Coaches
You've just read about how a Sopris West product is helping
families in need. The Parent Coach author Steven
Richfield, Psy.D., has 20 years of clinical experience
with all types of families and offers expert advice through
professional articles. We've selected a few excerpts that can
help both parents and educators.
From “Blend But Don’t Bend: Coaching Leadership Skills”
Parents write: We worry about our children’s eagerness
to follow the crowd rather than lead. This has caused some
serious problems at school and within the community. Can you
offer some suggestions on how to raise leaders?
- Blend but don’t bend. Many children walk the
tightrope between their parents’ guidance on the one hand
and their peer group’s influence on the other. The challenge
is for them to blend in with peer culture without their
principles bending in the face of pressure. Parents are
urged to discuss how peer pressure creeps into individual
decision making. Emphasize the importance of establishing a
boundary line between blending and bending. Draw a wide
circle on a page to represent this line. Identify acceptable
blending behaviors as inside the circle and undesirable ones
as outside. Propose hypothetical peer situations to get
children thinking about this boundary and how they might
reinforce the strength of their convictions.

High
Marks |
|
We love to hear from customers who are achieving success
with our products and services! Since securing an Early
Reading First grant through Sopris
West’s Grant Services at the start of the year, Granite
School District has implemented the We
Can! Early Childhood Curriculum in all of its
preschools.
Karen T. Kowalski, director of the Salt Lake City
district’s “Let's Get Started!” Early Reading First project,
gives “High Marks” to I Can Draw, the pre-writing
component of We Can! (available as a separate kit).
I Can Draw effectively includes multiple modalities:
gross and fine motor, stroke and letter chants, and
recognizing letter forms. Our children are happily practicing
these skills through various art and sensory games and
activities. The progress students have made in the first four
months of implementation is amazing!”
Do you have a success story involving your school or
district and Sopris West products or professional services? If
so, we’d love to share it with other customers! Please send
