Phase 1: Strategic Planning/Administrator Overview
In this one-day workshop, Sopris West will work with you and your staff to establish goals, accountability measures, and an implementation timeline based on your district’s needs. This strategic plan powers the entire process.
Results of Strategic Planning:
- Selection of schools, students, and teachers
- Administrator workshop, a crucial piece that drives the program implementation
- Outline of future phases, such as ongoing coaching and support
- Building local capacity.
Phase 2: Implementation Training
This two-day training prepares educators to implement the We Can!™ curriculum immediately. Educators return to the classroom with a strong foundation that allows them to effectively teach each component of the curriculum. The We Can! implementation training is designed for teachers, reading coaches, paraprofessionals, special education, clinicians, and other educators who work with pre-k students.
Results of Implementation Training. Educators gain:
- Groundwork in the best practices for early childhood education
- The skills to create a daily schedule that alternates whole and small group instruction
- A thorough knowledge of We Can!’s proven effective classroom management system
- A clear understanding of how to implement all components of the We Can! curriculum for maximum student achievement.
Phase 3: Ongoing Implementation Support
Follow-up Trainings: Each follow-up training is a one-day session. In the first follow-up training, the We Can! trainer reconvenes with teachers to discuss any problem areas since the initial training, such as pacing, classroom management issues, or general content. The second follow-up training is an opportunity for the We Can! trainer and teachers to delve deeper into content through topic-specific workshops. Teachers choose from a menu of workshop offerings that can enrich their current practices, help them become highly qualified teachers, and qualify for course credit.
Site visits: The We Can! trainer visits We Can! classrooms to observe and coach individual teachers, demonstrate model lessons, conduct question-and-answer sessions, and provide updates on the latest materials. We recommend two to four site visits per school year.
Results of Ongoing Implementation Support:
- Help support teachers in the implementation of We Can!
- Assist in troubleshooting and addressing challenges
- Ensure fidelity of instruction
- Provide accountability.
Phase 4: Building Local Capacity
Training of Trainers (TOTs)
A three-day training of trainers allows a school district to train personnel to provide future teacher training. This is an essential piece in the sustainability of the implementation. Qualified district candidates attend a We Can! TOT session and begin the process toward area certification.
Results of Building Local Capacity. District mentors/coaches:
- Provide on-site We Can! resource and support
- Conduct initial implementation trainings and follow-up trainings
- Sustain high-quality implementation of the curriculum.
